Wednesday - 2/29/2012

  • Buddy Readers
  • Math -  Today's topic was Line Graphs - homework is: Investigation 9 (due tomorrow) 
  • Science with Mrs. Nelson
  • Journals - orange and yellow journals were due today: every student is expected to write a journal entry for each school day.
  • Spelling - students were expected to sort the spelling words, write the rule, and six sentences using two spelling words per sentence.  All students finished the assignment in class.
  • Study Island
  • Reading - Students reading Phoebe the Spy read with me today.  All other students read a short story, summarized that story, and then read a book of their own choice, and left tracks of their thinking - due today. This assignment is part of their Independent Work grade.
  • English - Today's topic was Quotations . . . again. This was a difficult assignment for several in the class so I printed the pages from the book for us to complete again, to give students more practice with this difficult concept.

  • Math - turned in Lesson 90 - Today we took test 17.  The tests have been scored and returned to students. 
  • Storytelling Festival - What a treat!  Many of the stories we heard today were fantastic.  Ask your child which stories he/she liked.  I loved the goose story.
  • Social Studies - Students who were finished with their math test had a few minutes to continue to work on their Preamble booklet.  Because there are a handful of students that are still not finished with their Preamble booklet I am changing the due date to Friday, March 2nd.

  • Journals - red, green, and blue journals were due today: every student is expected to write a journal entry for each school day.
  • Spelling - students were given a new spelling list today they were expected to sort the list with teacher guidance, and cut out the spelling words.  
  • Reading - Students reading Drylongso read with me today.  All other students read a short story, summarized it, and then read a book of their own choice, and left tracks of their thinking - due today. This assignment is part of their Independent Work grade.
  • English - Turn in English page 192 (1-22) Today's topic was Quotations - this is a tricky one for most students - English page 194 (1-22) due tomorrow.
  • Social Studies - Finish up drawing the illustrations in the Preamble booklet.  The booklet is due Wednesday morning.

  • English - Students worked in small teams to find adjectives from a dictionary - each team chose a letter of the alphabet.  They turned the list in today when time ran out.
  • Writing - One persuasive essay was begun today. Persuasive: Journal
  • Reading - As a class we listened to and read a story about Paul Revere.  We also had a guest reader share a Dr. Seuss story.  It was great.
  • Social Studies- We began rewriting the Preamble to the Constitution in a way that makes sense to kids in fifth grade - this assignment is due Monday.

  • Reading - Students reading The Tiger Rising read with me today, and we finished our book.  All other students read a short story while leaving tracks of their thinking, and then read a book of their own choice, and left tracks of their thinking - due today. This assignment is part of their Independent Work grade.
  • English - turned in Worksheet 5 Proper Adjectives - Today we played a game to review Unit 4 Adjectives.  Tomorrow or Friday we will have the Unit test. Test tomorrow or Friday.

  • Social Studies - I will be gathering the notebooks to give credit for each year that students have notes.  If they are missing a year between 1775 and 1783 they can borrow a classmate's notebook to get caught upStudents were able to choose whether they wanted to draw a map of the United States boundaries in 1783 or a narrative about the Treaty of Paris - Today they finished working as a team on a research assignment, studying leaders from the American Revolution - the report is due Friday.
