Monday 4/30/2012

• Core Test - The first thing we did this morning was take a Language Arts core test.  Students take the second Language Arts test tomorrow at 10:00.
• Math -  Turned in Solids Worksheet  - Today we began a project called Candies-R-Us (to teach students about surface area and volume) the assignment is still confusing to some students, so we will revisit the topic tomorrow - no math homework today
• Journals - red journals were due today: every student is expected to write a journal entry for each school day
• Spelling - Students received a new spelling list today.  The test will be Friday students need to cut out one set of spelling words to use here at school and take one set home.
• Reading - I read with students Punished while other students read silently on their own.  Appropriate participation is part of their independent work grade.
• English - We are reviewing topics from Unit 6 - Today’s topic was Subject Pronouns: homework is worksheet 6.1 Subject Pronouns (due tomorrow)
• Social Studies - We discussed differences between the North and South in the mid-1800s - and  made a list of differences in our notebooks. 
• P.E. with Mrs. Lyman

• Journals - blue journals were due today: every student is expected to write a journal entry for each school day.
• Spelling -Test
• Music - We finished learning the words to 50 Nifty United States
• Reading - As a class we read a story called "A Boy Called Slow" about Sitting Bull
• Auction - It was our third auction today.  Students were able to use class cash to buy items. 
• Social Studies - Today we worked on learning items from the Great American Award
• Computers with Mrs. Croft

• Math -  Students were given a second look at any problems they missed on yesterday's test homework: The parallelogram project we've been working on for the past several days is due tomorrow and we created six 3-D shapes - they are due tomorrow as well

• Spelling - practice with a partner - test tomorrow
• Computer time for students who are caught up with all of their work.
• Battleship - Today students were able to sink the aircraft carrier and destroyer. Only the battleship is left.  Keep it up everybody.

• Math -  Today I had the students take a test.  I will grade those and give them a chance to fix any they missed before marking the final score - We worked more on the parallelograms homework but many students still need time/instruction to complete it, so no homework again today - I'm sure you're very disappointed ; )
• Science with Mrs. Nelson
• Journals - yellow journals were due today: every student is expected to write a journal entry for each school day.
• Spelling - speed sort
• Music - "Amazing Grace" on recorders - it's sounding pretty good
• Study Island - Students are encouraged to complete as many tests as possible - Getting them all finished would be great. Students can access their account from home as well.
• Reading - Students reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler read with me today.  All other students read their assigned book - This assignment is part of their Independent Work grade.
• English - turned in page 264 (1-24) - Today we reviewed Unit 6. I think we'll review Unit 6 with worksheets before taking that test
• Social Studies - turned in the map with Oregon, Mormon, and California trails - Today we studied the California Gold Rush and the Trail of Tears the notes written in class were the assignment that went along with it

• Math -  Turned in the lesson on finding the Area of Triangles - Today's topic was Parallelograms - no homework today 
• Science with Mrs. Nelson
• Journals - orange journals were due today: every student is expected to write a journal entry for each school day.
• Spelling - students were expected to sort the spelling words, write the rule, and write three acrostic spelling words (the green spelling group was asked only to illustrate each of their words).  Almost all students finished the assignment in class. 
• I Have/Who Has - GCF and LCM
• Reading - Students reading the earthquake book read with me today.  All other students read their assigned book on their own, and wrote down five questions from their reading. This assignment is part of their Independent Work grade.
• English - turned in page 262 (1-22) - Today's topic was Adverb or Preposition? - homework: English page 264 (1-24) - due tomorrow
• Social Studies - We discussed and took notes on the Oregon, Mormon, and California Trails. Homework - students need to draw a map of the trails including an outline of each of the states the trail goes through (due tomorrow)

• Battleship - Because of fantastic behavior in art the students earned one ship already sinking.  We sunk the patrol boat, then with only four guesses sunk the submarine as well.  Keep it up everybody.

• Journals - yellow journals were due today: every student is expected to write a journal entry for each school day.
• Spelling - students were expected to sort the spelling words, write the rule, and write eight sentences with two spelling words in each sentence (the green spelling group was asked only to illustrate each of their words).  Almost all students finished the assignment in class. 
• Area - Students were asked to draw 10 different sized hexagons, then find the perimeter and area of each.  Many students turned the assignment in today.  If they didn't finish in class today it is homework and is due tomorrow.
• Reading - Students reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler read with me today.  All other students read their assigned book with a partner and then read on their own. This assignment is part of their Independent Work grade.
• English - turned in page 252 (1-18) - Today's topic was Negatives - homework: English page 254 (1-18) - due tomorrow
• Social Studies - Today we studied the Lewis and Clark Expedition the notes written in class were the assignment that went along with it

Students earned an activity.  Tomorrow they can bring something electronic to play with and a treat that is not messy.  Students will be given about 30 minutes for the activity.

• Spelling - students were expected to sort the spelling words, write the rule, and draw illustrations for ten of the words.  Almost all students finished the assignment in class.
• Study Island  - topics in Math (properties of operations) and ELA (transitions and generate questions)
• Reading – We rearranged the groups just a little bit.  Those who had been reading The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg have had a few added to their group and are now reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.  The other students read with a partner and then read on their own.  Staying on task during reading each day is part of their Independent Work grade.
