August 24, 2012

The second day of school was long, but we accomplished a lot.

  • Math Test - this morning students took the final fifth grade math test.  I'm going to compare their scores in the spring with the scores earned today to see how much they will have learned by the end of fifth grade.  It was a long test (50 questions) and quite difficult, but by the end of the year it will seem easy. The results from this test will not be on student's grades.
  • Math - I taught lessons 3 and 4 (homework is only lesson 4).  The first several lessons are review, so we will do 2 lessons a day for about a week.  Students are invited to complete lesson 3, however it is not required.
  • Second Steps - Our first lesson in Second Steps encouraged students to "Walk, Walk, Walk" in another person's shoes and try to understand what they might be feeling.  The vocabulary word for the lesson was empathy.
  • Journal - students were expected to write five lines in their journal about bus procedures.
  • Teacher Read - I began reading Because of Winn-Dixie.  Today Opal brought a dog home from the grocery store. Her father, the preacher, said she could keep him.
  • Science - Students wrote the benchmark for standard 2 of science (see below).  They need to work on memorizing it.  They will recite, sing, act out, or show pictures of the benchmark in class next Friday.
  • Assembly - this afternoon we had a no bullying assembly with a magician.
Have a great weekend!

FYI - this is the science benchmark students are working on:

Science Benchmark (Standard 2)

The Earth's surface is constantly changing. Some changes happen very slowly over long periods of time, such as weathering, erosion, and uplift. Other changes happen abruptly, such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.  All around us, we see the visible effects of the building up and breaking down of the Earth's surface.
